Trans*Performatividade
SYNOPSIS
“Trans*Performativity” is an ongoing project that consists in the transposition of trans* experiences into contemporary practices that fuse the sharing of testimonial stories through audiovisuals and the creation of collective performances.
The movement subjectively represents processes of transformation and metamorphosis, the scenography proposes an innovative and safe space, the costumes weave individual and collective identity and the light design gives visibility to underrepresented matters, allowing the audience to perceive, understand and participate freely.
DESCRIPTION
“Trans*Performativity” proposes the relationship between theoretical areas such as Sociology, Philosophy, Gender Studies, Queer Theory and New Ecologies with contemporary practices that fuse Visual Art and Performance Art.
The project is divided into five stages
Artistic Research and Fieldwork around gender dissident stories of the past-present-future, including conversations and workshops with minority and local communities.
Creation and Rehearsals with transgender people, preferably local, selected through an open call, with interest / training / experience in Performance, Theatre and/or Dance.
Physical or digital exhibition of the audiovisual interviews carried out with the performers.
Collective performance on trans performativities and subjectivities with the contribution of the artistic and technical team.
Book publication and digital platform launch.
The final piece, open to the public, will be developed conceptually (idea and form), choreographically (actions and movement), dramaturgically (composition and content) and technically (audiovisual, light, scenography and costume design) and will reflect, in a direct or assimilated way, the research in a safe, immersive and situational space.
It was first developed in Portugal with two casts of local performers (1 in Porto and 1 in Lisboa) and is touring across V.N. Famalicão, Setúbal, Porto and Lisbon (2023), Miranda do Douro, Vila Verde, Mesão Frio, Armamar, V.N. Foz Côa and Velas (2024-25). The next phase includes producing with new casts and presenting internationally in the UK, Iceland, Switzerland, and other countries to be confirmed.
ARTISTIC INTENTIONS
The project “Trans*Performativity” proposes the intersection between artistic research and practice, digital and physical elements, the trans community and society, based on the premise of how to transpose our experience as trans people into a work with an artistic, cultural and social impact, where the movement subjectively represents processes of transformation and metamorphosis, the scenography proposes an innovative and safe space, the costumes weave individual and collective identity and the light design gives visibility to underrepresented issues, allowing the audience to perceive, understand and participate freely.
We live in a current context in which gender issues have been increasingly discussed, making minority communities, such as transgender people, more visible and understood by society, however there has also been an increase in hate speech, violence and misinformation in relation to them. In this way, we propose a unique project created by trans people with the support of trans and cis professionals in the sector and partner institutions, in order to establish a constant and strengthening dialogue between people of different genders, ethnicities and backgrounds, so that we can move towards a more fair, inclusive and tolerant world.
At the same time, we aspire to combat the loneliness generally felt by the trans community, by enabling various moments of joint creation and experience sharing, both personal and professional, so that we can establish meaningful and exemplary connections in the cultural field, while following ethical and sustainable principles that equally value our work.
Based on a long and pertinent research around gender studies, queer theories and transfeminist thoughts, in order to immediately validate its theoretical and conceptual content, we will experiment and apply the theory to audiovisual and movement practices.
At presentation venues, the project will be displayed in two different formats. The first will be exhibition and audiovisual through the display of five large projections / screens throughout the space, in which the public is invited to explore, see, hear, feel and relate to the different personal stories of each performer. The second will be performative and collaborative through the creation of a performance with the artistic team and input from external eyes, to be openly shared with the public.
During each artistic residency, we will speak directly with local communities about gender and intersectionality, in order to build a discursive bridge between artist-public, transgender-cisgender. After each presentation, there will be an open conversation, where we can debate, imagine, question and reflect together.
In short, “Trans*Performativity” is an innovative project, designed by trans people for everyone, which promises to diversify and decolonise the artistic and cultural field, with the inherent support of the artistic and technical team, partner entities and the audience.
