ISLANDS - A CONSTELLATION

"Islands - a constellation" addresses the imaginary of island's geography and travelling. It starts with the idea that an island is a body surrounded by the sea and lives cradled by the alternation of tides. Its sea mirrors the sky, and an island is a kind of star. It is no accident that islands, when drawn on maps or when captured by satellite images, look like constellations and invite the imagination of the fantastic. The island territory has long been the scene of fascinating journeys and fundamental to think of the most exuberant utopias and the darkest dystopias.

This piece explores choreography and movement in an intrinsic relation with sound design. It develops a soundscape through feedbacks, vocal exercises based on the body's breathing movement and field recordings made in islands nature reserves.

"lslands - a constellation" is a long-term project developed through different artistic objects. It started out as a work made for a series of “audio-choreographies”, a concept invented for sound´pieces, which resulted from a sound work designed from a body and movement thinking. These pieces reflect on three primordial gestures of humanity: breathing, walking and being still. This triad belongs to the matrix movements of human beings, breathing the gesture that gives life and in its absence withdraws it. Walking the gesture that makes us move forward, seeking. And being still the fundamental gesture that intersperses each and every movement. This tree gestures are also Sara’s Anjo main field of artistic and choreographic research.

In addition to the three matrix gestures, this work addresses the imaginary of insular geography, in particular the fact of thinking and situating both utopian and dystopian thinking in the islands. From the audio-choreographies a performance was created, which premiered at Lisboa Soa Festival, at Mãe D ́Água, an old water reservoir. This piece was inspired by the theme of the artist Alberto Carneiro “the paths of water and the body on earth”, and during the creative process it travelled through Madeira Archipelago, covering several of the water paths of Madeira Island and walks in the biosphere reserves of Selvagens and Desertas Islands.

As a performance, this piece proposes a symbiotic process between sound, voice and movement. It also seeks to provide the public with a contemplative and hypnotic state.
